Do You Have a Wasp Infestation?

Hornets are wasps, and so are yellow jackets, but wasps are neither hornets nor yellow jackets. And bees are something totally different. Confusing right? 

When you see a stinging insect, it matters less about exactly what type of pest it is and more that it can sting you and is a little too close for comfort. 

Yes, wasps are not the kind of insects you want to share your space with. But it’s important to know what you’re looking at when determining whether you have a wasp infestation. 

Identifying Wasps: Hornets vs. Yellow Jackets 

Hornets and yellow jackets are both common types of wasps in the South. 

Hornets are larger and less likely to attack unless they feel their colony is threatened. Hornets are most common in the Southeast but are less “out and about” than other stinging pests. They’ll likely stay away from you if you stay away from them. 

Yellow jackets are much smaller and are far more aggressive. Yellow jackets are scavengers, so you may see them buzzing around barbecues, garbage cans, or anything sticky or sweet left outside. Worst of all, yellow jackets can -- and will -- sting multiple times if provoked. 

Wasps are winged insects with narrow or pinched waists. They are primarily black with yellow or orange markings, sometimes interpreted as stripes. 

Signs of a Wasp Infestation

The first and most obvious sign of a wasp infestation is spotting one. If you only notice one or two, it may just be a coincidence. If you repeatedly see more than two or the same couple of wasps, there’s probably a nest nearby. 

Now it’s time to look for the nest. Wasps like to build their nests in gutters, bushes, branches, crevices of porches, and along fences. 

• Hornets prefer to make their nests in the siding on your home, rotten logs, or trees and shrubs. 
• Yellow jackets will make nests underground, in wood piles, or in other enclosed spaces. 

Other signs include wood damage around your home or a repeated buzzing noise. You may not be able to see them, but trust your ears!
